Memorial Day aka Decoration Day

The Pike County History Center will be closed this coming Monday, May 30, 2016 in observance of Memorial Day. Please remember all veterans that have served and have either returned to their loved ones safely, injured, or have given the ultimate sacrifice. Veterans of all branches of service have given so much so that America can be a safe place to raise your family. Please thank a veteran every day for their service!

Here is a little history regarding Decoration Day.

Girl Scouts visiting the History Center

We had some more kiddos visiting the History Center tonight. Pike County Girl Scout Troops 211 and 296 visited the History Center to work on the Bicentennial Patch this evening. They learned some neat information about Pike County and some songs from the turn of the century. They also learned how to play some old time games children used to play such as jacks and tic-tac-toe.

Did you ever wonder about the expense of burying a loved one in the past? Looking for the location of the grave of a veteran? Or his widow?

Did you know many ex-union soldiers, sailors or marines were buried at the expense of the county. These records are available at the history center.
