Memorial Day aka Decoration Day

The Pike County History Center will be closed this coming Monday, May 30, 2016 in observance of Memorial Day. Please remember all veterans that have served and have either returned to their loved ones safely, injured, or have given the ultimate sacrifice. Veterans of all branches of service have given so much so that America can be a safe place to raise your family. Please thank a veteran every day for their service!

Here is a little history regarding Decoration Day.

We had some more kiddos visiting the History Center tonight. Pike County Girl Scout Troops 211 and 296 visited the History Center to work on the Bicentennial Patch this evening. They learned some neat information about Pike County and some songs from the turn of the century. They also learned how to play some old time games children used to play such as jacks and tic-tac-toe.

Zeb's Ready For a New Coat

Zeb the Bison has been spotted hanging out at Pike Collision in Petersburg, Indiana. He must be getting ready for his spring coat!

Zebulon the Bison has arrived in Petersburg!

Here are a few photos of Pike County's newest resident. Zebulon the Bison, named after Zebulon Pike, is one of Indiana's Bicentennial Bison. Through United Way, each county was available to sponsor a bison for their community. Local artists could paint the bison and have them on display in celebration of the Bicentennial year for Indiana. Zeb the Bison arrived tonight from his previous home in Nebraska. He will be on display for about a week before heading off to be clear coated and then out to Pike Central for his new artsy coat. Be on the lookout for Zeb!

The bakery items included "breadstuff daily, Charlotte, Russe, Captain, fancy, decorated and wedding cakes, rolls, buns, jellies and numerous delicacies, and a specialty is made of pastries."  (Printed in the Pike County Dispatch in 1911).
